Ouachita’s Carl Goodson Honors Program awards grants, inducts new members

- Chelsea WhelpleyOuachita Baptist University’s Carl Goodson Honors Program recently awarded six travel
grants for individual research initiatives, inducted 55 new members and recognized
seniors for successful thesis proposals at its annual Black and White Reception.
“The annual Black and White Reception is the night members of the Carl Goodson Honors
Program and Honors alumni gather to be inspired and to celebrate the accomplishments
of its members,” explained Dr. Barbara Pemberton, director of the program and professor
of Christian missions. “We are thrilled for these students and for all those who received
grants to have opportunities like this.”
The recipients chosen for the travel grants include Sara Cat Williams, Ben Elrod Scholar;
Kathleen Suit, Carl Goodson Scholar; Elizabeth Bacon and Sam Pascoe, Honors Council
Scholars; and Collin Battaglia and Mack McGehee, Garrett Ham Scholars.

“It is such a blessing to have been chosen for the Ben Elrod Scholarship,” said Williams,
a junior biology and psychology double major from Roland, Ark., who will use the grant
to study ceramics at Penland Craft Studios in North Carolina. “It has given me the opportunity to
further my education by doing something that I otherwise would not have been able
to.”
Suit, a junior theatre arts major from Hot Springs, Ark., received the Carl Goodson
Scholarship to attend a workshop at the Movement Theatre Studio in New York.
Noting that winning the grant “is going to be a tremendous catalyst for my thesis,
as well as an opportunity for me to make connections and relationships that will help
me in my career,” Suit said, “I really enjoy that the Honors Program has cultivated
a community of students from all backgrounds that share the same thirst for knowledge,
greatness and bettering our world.”
The Honors Council Scholarship was awarded to Bacon, a junior Christian studies/Christian
missions major from Bryant, Ark., and Pascoe, a junior Spanish and biology major from
Vilonia, Ark. As officers of Alpha Tau, the student organization affiliated with the
Honors Program, they will use the grant to attend the National Collegiate Honors Council
Conference next fall.
The recipients of the Garrett Ham Scholarship are Battaglia, a senior biblical languages,
Christian studies/biblical studies and Christian studies/Christian theology triple
major from Benton, Ark., and McGehee, a junior Christian studies/Christian ministry
major from Little Rock, Ark., who will use the grant for biblical studies research.
Speakers at the reception included: Jacob Lively, a 2012 Ouachita graduate, two-time
OBU Student Senate President and founding member of Alpha Tau; and Garrett Ham, a
2007 graduate of Ouachita and the Honors Program.
