Ouachita hosts premiere Chamber Winds concert March 16

March 12, 2015 - Chelsea Whelpley

The Ouachita Baptist University Division of Music will present the premiere concert of Ouachita Chamber Winds, an OBU instrumental ensemble, on Monday, March 16, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus. The concert is free and open to the public.

“The group was formed to give our students the opportunity of playing and listening to instrumental chamber music. Instrumental music has a rich repertoire of chamber music that our students haven't experienced,” said Dr. Craig Hamilton, Lena Goodwin Trimble professor of music and director of bands. “We are playing literature that showcases music written for small ensembles of woodwind and brass instruments.”

The program will include the following selections: Charles Gounod’s “Petite Symphonie,” Richard Strauss’ “Serenade in Eb, Op. 7” and Gordon Jacob’s “Old Wine in New Bottles.”

Acknowledging his excitement in premiering the ensemble, Hamilton said, “I think the audience will enjoy the music and the unique sounds created by the Chamber Winds.”
