April 02, 2015 - McKenzie Cranford
Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host Sarah Talley in her senior
voice recital, “Caught in the in-Between,” on Tuesday, April 7, at 8 p.m. The performance
will be held in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus
and is free and open to the public. A reception will be held in Hammons Gallery following
the recital.
“I feel as if almost every class that I have taken at Ouachita has prepared me for
this moment,” said Talley, a vocal performance major from Bella Vista, Ark. “Tuesday
will be the culmination of four years of training, months of planning and countless
hours of practice.
“This recital would not be happening without the hard work of Mr. Briggs and Mrs.
Walker, my teacher and accompanist,” Talley added. “Thus, this performance is not
just about me because it is about everyone who has helped me reach this point, and
I think that is the real significance of this entire process.”
Singing music ranging from classical to musical theatre pieces, Talley will perform
Robert Schumann’s “Schone Fremde” as well as “Auf einer Burg” and “Wehmut” from Liederkreis, Op. 39; George Frideric Handel’s “V’adoro pupille” from Giulio Cesare; Alfredo Catalani’s “Ebben? Ne andro lontana” from La Wally; Georges Bizet’s “Habenera” and “Seguidilla” from Carmen; Francis Poulenc’s “Les chemins de I’amour”; Erich W. Korngold’s “Adieu, Good Man
Devil,” “Hey Robin” and “For the Rain, It Raineth Every Day” from Songs of the Clown, Op. 29; Lee Hoiby’s “Autumn” from Songs for Leontyne; Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim’s “Small World” from Gypsy; and Stephen Sondheim’s “The Ladies Who Lunch” from Company.
Phyllis Walker, OBU staff accompanist, will serve as her collaborative pianist, and
John Alec Briggs, adjunct instructor of voice and staff accompanist, has served as
her voice instructor.
Affirming her enthusiasm for the opportunity to present her senior recital, Talley
said, “This is an opportunity to do something that I absolutely love and have a great
passion for, and the best part is that I get to share it with others. How could that
not be exciting?”
