Ouachita instrumental ensembles to present PRISM concert April 21

Ouachita Baptist University’s instrumental program will hold its final concert of
the academic year, “PRISM,” on Tuesday, April 21, at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing
Arts Center. The concert is free and open to the public.
“The PRISM concert is a special program in which the audience is surrounded by the
performers and the program proceeds continuously without applause,” said Dr. Craig
Hamilton, OBU’s Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. “It
is a wonderful experience in which the audience is immersed in sound which is constantly
changing.”
The concert features the full range of Ouachita’s instrumental ensembles on one program,
a quality that, according to Hamilton, earned the performance its “PRISM” title –
representing many colors from the same source.
“I love the PRISM concert,” he added. "We are able to showcase our program and the
many talented faculty and students in our instrumental department.”
Tiger Steel will perform “Pan in A Minor” by Aldwyn ‘Kitchener’ Roberts. Other percussion
selections include a marimba duo performing “Catching Shadows” by Ivan Trevino and
the Percussion Ensemble performing “Short Circuits” by Lalo Davila.
The Clarinet Ensemble will perform Lloyd Conley’s arrangement of “Gypsy Dance” from
Georges Bizet’s Carmen. The Trombone Choir will perform “Venezia” by Raymond Burkhart and “Suite for Trombones”
by Gordon Jacob. The Flute Choir will perform “Ecossaise” from “The Academie of Dance”
by Catherine McMichael. The String Ensemble will perform “Blue Ridge Rum” by Alan
Lee Silva. The Saxophone Quartet will perform “Hoedown” by Will Gregory and the “Ceilidh”
from Gavin Whitlock’s “Celtic Suite.” The Horn Quartet will perform Jack Gale and
Bryan Doughty’s arrangement of “Just a Closer Walk With Thee.”
The Wind Ensemble will perform four selections: the third movement of Robert W. Smith’s
“Vaughan Williams Suite,” “Declaration and Flourish”; “Metal” by Brian Balmages; Jay
Bocook’s arrangement of “Bolero” by Maurice Ravel; and the fifth movement of Robert
Russell Bennett’s “Suite of Old American Dances,” “Rag.”
The concert also will include the Chamber Winds performing “Aubade,” the second movement
of “Consort for Ten Winds” by Robert Spittal.
