Ouachita professor among panelists on Oct. 27 Science Café Little Rock
October 27, 2015 - OBU News Bureau
Dr. Lori Hensley, the J.D. Patterson Chair of Biology at Ouachita Baptist University,
will be among featured panelists at tonight’s Science Café Little Rock. Highlighting
“Novel Cancer Treatments,” panelists will discuss promising research avenues and current
cancer treatments.
Held from 7-9 p.m. at Afterthought Bistro in Little Rock’s Hillcrest neighborhood,
Science Café is a relaxed opportunity for monthly exchanges with various experts.
No reservations are needed, but seating is limited. Admission is free.
“It was a surprise and an honor to be invited to participate in the Science Café panel,”
Hensley noted. “It’s a unique opportunity for me to discuss the role undergraduate
students can play in cancer research, while discussing our work with experts in the
field as well as members of the public.”
Hensley said she is “looking forward to answering questions about the potential role
for cannabinoids in the treatment of pediatric cancers and listening to the ideas
of others.”
In addition to Hensley, this month’s panel will include Dr. Angus MacNicol, a professor
in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine’s department
of neurobiology and developmental science, and Dr. Issam Makhoul, associate professor
and director of the UAMS College of Medicine’s division of hematology and oncology.
Dr. Dorothy Graves, a research assistant professor and director of research and publications
in the UAMS College of Medicine’s division of hematology and oncology, will serve
as panel moderator.
Graves also will host the corresponding live call-in program, “Science Café Little
Rock,” on National Public Radio-affiliate KUAR-FM 89.1. Tonight’s science talk show,
featuring Makhoul as the guest speaker, will air from 6:05 to 6:30 p.m., prior to
the live Science Café event.
Science Café forums are held the fourth Tuesday of each month, except for July, August
and December. The forum was created in partnership with UAMS, Arkansas Biosciences
Institute, Aristotle, KUAR-FM 89.1 and the Afterthought Bistro. Visit the website
