Ouachita Baptist University faculty member Dr. Becky Morrison presented research at
the 14th annual Hawaii International Conference for Arts and Humanities in January.
The conference was held in Honolulu, Hawaii, and was sponsored by the University of
Kentucky.
Morrison’s presentation, “The Chest Voice Function in the Classically Trained Soprano:
A survey of vocal pedagogy and recording analysis and the implications for the modern
vocal pedagogue,” consisted of a paper accompanied by listening examples from 1908-2000.
“My research centered on a comparative analysis between the vocal pedagogy from the
17th century through the 20th century and what we hear on recordings throughout the
20th century,” explained Morrison, an assistant professor of music who serves as chair
of Ouachita’s Department of Music Education. “The research included the burgeoning
field of vocal science and how that informed vocal pedagogues to teach someone to
sing correctly and with health.”
Individuals from approximately 15 countries attended the conference and gave presentations
on various topics in music, philosophy, art, history, religion and dance.
“It was an eclectic conference, and I met some very interesting and intelligent people,”
said Morrison. “While my research centered on the voice, I heard fascinating research
on arts education, philosophy and cultural issues that face the world today. I felt
honored to be a part of such an amazing collection of research and people!”
