Ouachita to host Keathley in senior art exhibit March 7-16

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts will host Ashley Keathley in her senior art exhibit March 7-16 in Hammons Gallery, located in Mabee Fine Arts Center. The exhibit is free and open to the public. A reception also will be held in Hammons Gallery at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 11.

Keathley, a senior Christian studies/Christian ministries, Christian studies/Christian missions and graphic design major from Carlisle, Ark., will exhibit various graphic design and studio art pieces she has completed during her time at Ouachita. Though Keathley said she feels the styles of her graphic design and studio art are distinct, her exhibit will reflect how she likes mixing the two.

“I like painting and drawing just as much as I do graphic design,” Keathley said. “Though I’m a graphic design major, I don’t consider myself just a graphic designer. I needed to find a way to bring them together.”

Keathley said her exhibit will not only showcase her work but also the role of faith in her art.

“This is a show about my artwork—how I’ve learned, grown and branded myself—but it’s more than that,” Keathley said. “Also, being a Christian studies major, I’ve learned and grown as a Christian. That growth plays out in my artwork, whether my faith is my inspiration or whether my artwork is a form of worship.”

Keathley said her studio art classes at Ouachita have given her the opportunity to experiment and have prepared her for what she might do after graduation.

“I’ll work at improving and then look for whatever doors open, whether in graphic design or painting,” Keathley said.

Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, contact OBU’s School of Fine Arts at (870) 245-5129.
