October 20, 2016 - Erin Jackson
Ouachita Baptist University’s Wind Ensemble will present its fall concert on Tuesday,
Nov. 1, in Jones Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free and open
to the public.
The ensemble is composed of 43 students and directed by Dr. Craig Hamilton, Ouachita’s
Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands.
“We have programed a wide variety of music,” Hamilton said. “I am very proud of our
students’ performance of each of the selections and know the audience will enjoy the
concert.”
The program will begin with Andrew Boysen Jr.’s “Alchemy.” The second selection is
Percy Aldridge Grainger’s “Lincolnshire Posy,” a six-movement piece based on folk
songs that has become the cornerstone of the band repertoire. “A Childhood Remembered”
by Rossano Galante, “Pageant” by Vincent Persichetti and Carl Strommen’s “Chroma”
follow. Next is a musical tribute to the late Sir Malcolm Arnold, “Along an English
Countryside” by Richard L. Saucedo. The concert concludes with “Chorale and Shaker
Dance” by John Zdechlik, including an opening chorale and variations on the Shaker
tune “Simple Gifts.”.
“This year’s concert stands out because of the variety of music that we’re playing.
The pieces range from the early 1900s to recent years,” said Sarah Coles, a junior
accounting and finance double major from Van Buren, Ark. “This year’s program is also
made up of several different genres and styles of music.”
The concert will be available live online at www.obu.edu/band. For more information, contact Dr. Craig Hamilton at [email protected] or (870) 245-5137.
