YKOuachita Baptist University will host Dr. Youmee Kim in concert on Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

Dr. Kim, an acclaimed pianist, is a specialist in American contemporary piano music. Currently an assistant professor of piano at Ohio University, she holds a Master of Music degree from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea; a Master of Music degree from Indiana University; and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in piano performance from Ohio State University.

According to Dr. Lei Cai, professor of piano at Ouachita, Dr. Kim’s performance “will be a great experience for people to open their musical and artistic view.”

Dr. Kim will perform a classical piano solo recital including music from around the world, mostly by composers from the 20th century. She will play music from various cultures, including pieces that are not often played in recital.

The recital, titled “Journey Around the World,” will include Kim’s arrangement of “Amazing Grace”; “Three Irish Legends: The Tides of Menaunaun, The Hero Sun and The Voice of Lir” by Henry Cowell; “Three Tangos” by Carlos Gardel, Igor Stravinsky and Astor Piazzolla; “Five Pieces for Piano Op. 24: Pastorale, Intermezzo, Capriccio Agitato, Canzonetta and Toccata” by Paul Ben-Haim; Kim’s arrangement of “Arirang,” a Korean traditional piece; and “Sonata No. 2: Allegro birbante, Come una romanza and Tema con variazioni” by Roberto Scarcella Perino.

Dr. Kim has appeared in performance in recitals, on concert series, at festivals and conferences in Canada, Serbia, South Korea, Taiwan and across the U.S. – most recently at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall.

The recipient of numerous awards including the Women in Music Competition, Dr. Kim currently serves as a judge for the World Piano Teachers Associations International Competition and Taiwan International Piano Competition. She is the author of An Analysis and Performance Guide to Benjamin Lees’ Odyssey I and II.

Ouachita’s Guest Artist Series allows the university to invite musicians and artists both nationally and internationally to share their arts on campus and in the community. For more information, contact Dr. Gary Gerber at [email protected] or (870) 245-5128.
