Ouachita to host Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition Dec. 9

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host its 11th annual W. Francis and Mary McBeth Ouachita Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition on Friday, Dec. 9. The event is sponsored by Mrs. Mary McBeth in honor of her husband, W. Francis McBeth, who was Arkansas’ composer laureate and a long-time Ouachita faculty member. The competition will be held from 3-5 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus.

Each student will perform a work with piano accompaniment, and the first place winner may be invited to perform as a featured soloist with the Ouachita Wind Ensemble in the spring semester. First place also receives a monetary award of $500. Second place receives $300, and third place received $200.

The competition is presented in a recital format, open to the public, with three outside judges. The winners will be announced immediately following the competition.

Students performing are: Becky Bloodworth, a senior instrumental music education major from Carrollton, Texas, on clarinet; Seth Daniell, a junior music composition major from Arkadelphia, Ark., on horn; Brandon Lovelady, a senior instrumental performance major from Hot Springs, Ark., on percussion; Ashley Lovely, a junior instrumental music education major from Van Alstyne, Texas, on clarinet; Jason Potts, a senior instrumental performance major from Springdale, Ark., on trombone; C.J. Slatton, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Paragould, Ark., on saxophone; Morgan Taylor, a sophomore music business major from Hot Springs, Ark., on saxophone; Blake Turner, a junior music major from Fort Worth, Texas, on trumpet; and Sierra Westberg, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Arkadelphia, Ark., on soprano saxophone.

Pianists accompanying the students in the competition are Kristen LaMadrid, Susan Monroe and Allyson West.
