Ouachita to host percussionist Richard Henson, Jr. in concert Feb. 27

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host percussionist Richard Henson,
Jr. in concert on Monday, Feb. 27, at 7:30 p.m. The concert, which is free and open
to the public, will be held in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s W. Francis McBeth Recital
Hall on the Ouachita campus. It will feature world percussion and hand drums from
around the globe.
Henson will perform eight pieces at the concert, including two original pieces, “Sinous
Frame” and “Necessary Endings”; four pieces by N. Scott Robinson, “Il Mano,” “Global
Positions,” “Shaken, Not Stirred” and “Handful”; “III. Lenjengo” from Djembe Recital Suite by B. Michael Williams; and “Manta Ray Dance” by Yousif Sheronick. “Necessary Endings”
will feature Dr. Ryan Lewis, OBU professor of music, as well as two Ouachita senior
instrumental music performance majors, Brandon Lovelady and Abby Tipps. Lovelady is
from Hot Springs, Ark., and Tipps is from Sulphur Springs, Texas.
Henson is an active performer and educator throughout the southeastern U.S., specializing
in classical percussion, marching percussion, drum set and world music. Henson has
performed at the East Tennessee Day of Percussion, as well as with the Chattanooga
Choral Arts Society and Sewanee Symphony Orchestra. He also has held multiple adjudicator
positions and has performed in various drum set and world music performances.
Henson is part-time director of percussion studies at Southern Adventist University
in Collegedale, Tenn., and part-time instructor of percussion at Lee University in
Cleveland, Tenn., where he teaches world percussion, applied lessons and percussion
techniques and assists with the percussion ensemble.
Henson earned his Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Tennessee-Martin
and his Master of Music degree from Lee University under the instruction of Dr. Andy
Harnsberger, Dr. Julie Hill and Nancy Matheson.
