Ouachita seniors Fender, Hutcheson and Sanders to present recitals March 14

Hannah Fender, Lauren Hutcheson and Bret Sanders will present their senior music theatre
recitals on Tuesday, March 14, at 7:30 p.m. The recital, which will be in Ouachita
Baptist University’s McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center, is free and open
to the public.
“This recital is the culmination of four years of hard work improving my skills, and
it is one of the final major milestones of my college experience,” Fender said. “I
love the pieces I’m getting to work on, and I look forward to sharing them with others.”
Fender is a senior musical theatre major from Maumelle, Ark. She is the president
of the Alpha Psi Omega national theatre honor society and was the director and creator
of Ouachita’s 2017 Muse Project production, Not a Clue. The Muse Project brings to life students’ creative proposals each spring.
Hutcheson is a senior musical theatre major from Bossier City, La. She is a member
of Theta Alpha Kappa national honor society for religious studies and theology and
received an honorable mention at Ouachita’s 2016 Shambarger Competition for Singers.
“I hope to bring a variety of songs and scenes to the stage that display what I have
learned, showcase my talent and entertain the audience,” Hutcheson said. “The recital
is the beginning of the end. It is the culmination of everything I have learned in
my degree at Ouachita, and I hope it lives up to the high but achievable expectations
our amazing faculty has for me.”
Sanders is a senior musical theatre major from Jonesboro, Ark. She is a member of
the Alpha Psi Omega national theatre honor society.
“Ouachita has given me a great outlet to learn and grow in a supportive environment,”
Sanders said. “This recital is the representation of all the work I’ve done over the
past four years and how much I’ve grown as an artist. I’m hoping to do the best I
can and have confidence and security in my abilities and training.”
Fender, Hutcheson and Sanders will perform several popular compositions from musicals,
including: Sara Bareilles’ “Opening Up” from Waitress, Andrew Lippa’s “My New Philosophy” from You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Cole Porter’s “De-Lovely” from Anything Goes, Michael Gordon’s “Why Not Me” from Carrie: The Musical and Andrew Lippa’s “Welcome to the World” from Jon and Jen.
Other featured songs are Frank Wildhorn’s “How ‘Bout a Dance” from Bonnie & Clyde, Arthur Laurents’ “Table for Two” and Jule Styne’s “You’ll Never Get Away from Me”
from Gypsy, Frederick Loewe’s “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly” from My Fair Lady, Brian Lowdermilk’s “Say the Word” from The Unauthorized Autobiography of Samantha Brown, Robert B. and Richard M. Sherman’s “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from Mary Poppins, Paul Gordon’s “Color of Your Eyes” from Daddy Long Legs, Stephen Schwartz’s “I’m Not That Girl” from Wicked, Stephen Schwartz’s “Spark of Creation” from Garden of Eden, John Kander’s “Cabaret” from Cabaret, Laurence O’Keefe’s “Three Bedroom House” from Bat Boy: The Musical and Duncan Sheik’s “Mama Who Bore Me” from Spring Awakening.
Dramatic presentations will include Act 2, Scene 2 of Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest; Michael Gordon’s one-act play Blue Stars; Act 1, Scene 8 of Tony Kushner’s Angels in America, Part One: Millennium Approaches; Tom Stoppard’s “The Question Game” from Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead; and Scene 7 from Lynne Bolen’s Boulevard of Broken Dreams.
David Stanley, instructor of music at Ouachita, along with Drew Hampton, assistant
professor of theatre arts, and Dr. Scott Holsclaw, professor of theatre arts, were
the instructors for Fender, Hutcheson and Sanders. Susan Monroe will be the accompanist
for the recital. Micah Brooks, a sophomore musical theatre major from Rockwall, Texas;
Tyler Lewis, a senior theatre arts major from Magnolia, Ark.; Michael Peré, a junior
musical theatre major from Little Rock, Ark.; and Cody Walls, a junior musical theatre
major from Huntington, Ark., also will perform in the recital.
