Ouachita Concert Choir to perform classics from across the ages April 27

- Kacy SpearsOuachita Baptist University’s Concert Choir will perform its annual spring concert
Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall. The concert is free and open
to the public and will feature choral classics from through the ages.
“We’re going through the different periods – Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic
and 20th Century – and we’re doing choral selections that are the masterworks throughout,”
said Dr. Gary Gerber, director of the choir and dean of Ouachita’s School of Fine
Arts.
This year’s concert will feature student conductors from Gerber’s Choral Conducting
II class as an opportunity “to teach them a little bit about not only conducting but
also choral techniques,” Gerber said.
To represent the Renaissance period, Concert Choir will be sing “If Ye Low Me” by
Thomas Tallis. This selection will be conducted by Margaret Geoffrion, a junior worship
arts major from Hot Springs, Ark.
For the Baroque period, the choir will sing “Hallelujah, Amen” by G.F. Handel. This
selection will be conducted by Morgan Reynolds, a junior worship arts major from Allen,
Texas.
For the Classical period, the group will perform “Dies Irae,” “Confutatis” and “Lacrymosa”
from W.A. Mozart’s Requiem and “The Heaven Are Telling” by Franz Joseph Haydn. The Mozart selections will be
conducted by Caroline Dunlap, a senior piano performance major from Little Rock, Ark.,
and the Haydn piece will be conducted by Gideon Garcia, a senior music education major
from Bismarck, Ark.
The Romanic period section will include “Hallelujah” from Christ on the Mount of Olives by Ludwig van Beethoven, conducted by Emily Weeden, a senior worship arts major from
Rogers, Ark., and “He, Watching Over Israel” by Felix Mendelssohn, conducted by Geoffrion.
The 20th century period selections will include: “Bogorodiste Devo” by Sergei Rachmaninoff,
conducted by Elizabeth Schutter, a junior music education major from Garland, Texas;
“The Last Words of David” by Randall Thompson, conducted by Garcia; and “Sure on This
Shining Night” by Morten Lauridsen, conducted by Courtney Kelley, a senior music education
major from Boerne, Texas.
Gerber also will conduct two 20th century selections, “The 150th Psalm” by Howard Hanson, and “Make Our Garden Grow”
from Candide by Leonard Bernstein.
