Dr. David Korevaar, professor of piano at the University of Colorado and graduate of The Julliard School, will perform a free concert in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall at Ouachita Baptist University on Friday, May 5, at 7:30 p.m.

“We are very excited to have Dr. Korevaar come and perform here at Ouachita,” said Dr. Adam Haas, visiting assistant professor of music at Ouachita. “This recital is not only important for our music students to motivate and inspire them, but it’s also an opportunity for everyone else at Ouachita and in the community to experience some wonderful music. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the last day of class than by hearing a recital by a world-class artist.”

In Korevaar’s artist statement, he said, “Playing for people – one person, 30 people, 500 people – has been one of the ongoing joys of my life as a musician. Sharing music through performance is one of the things that keeps me going. And, sharing music by teaching others about it is equally important.”

Korevaar began his piano studies at age 6 and at age 13 became a student of the great American virtuoso Earl Wild. By age 20, he had earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from The Julliard School, where he later completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree. He currently lives in Boulder, Colo., and Dallas, Texas, and is a Kawai artist.

In addition to being the Peter and Helen Weil Professor of Piano and the 2016 Distinguished Research Lecturer at the University of Colorado, Korevaar has earned numerous awards, contributed to dozens of recordings and is an active solo and chamber performer. He has performed throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia and has performed and taught as part of the U.S. State Department’s Cultural Envoy program. He is a founding member of the Boulder Piano Quartet, current resident at The Academy in Boulder, former member of the Clavier Trio and a regular guest with the Takács Quartet among other ensembles.

“Live performance is a community activity – something that is important in our modern world,” Korevaar noted in his statement. “In this day of increasing availability of sound that freezes out the sound of the world around us, I think it is important that we have moments when we are listening to the same music at the same time, and when we are producing that music, together, in the same place.”

Korevaar will perform Sonata in D major, Op. 10, No. 3 by Ludwig van Beethoven, Two Nocturnes by Lowell Lierbermann, five selections from Nove Poemetti by Luigi Perrachio and Four Piano Pieces, Op. 119 by Johannes Brahms.
