Ouachita Baptist University’s Rosemary Adams Department of Art and Design will host
an exhibit featuring selections from the university’s permanent collection Sept. 1-27,
including original works by prominent artists Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran. The
exhibit, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Rosemary Gossett
Adams Galleries, located in Moses Provine Hall on Ouachita’s campus.
Thomas Moran and Albert Bierstadt have both had works displayed in the White House,
the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Pieces by
these artists were donated to Ouachita by Dr. Loyde Hudson in 2014. Moran is an American
painter and printmaker from the Hudson River School, and Bierstadt is a German-American
painter. A highlight of the exhibit will be Moran’s “Lookout Rock – Yosemite Valley.”
Prints of photographs from Andrè Kertèsz, a Hungarian-American photographer, will
also be featured, along with prints by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and George Rouault.
The Kertèsz prints were a gift from the Allen Tillery family of Hot Springs, Ark.
“Given the quality of some of the works we have in our collection, we hope to get
them out in front of students and the Arkadelphia community as often as possible,”
said Donnie Copeland, chair of Ouachita’s Adams Department of Art and Design. “It
has been more than a year since we exhibited any of these pieces, so this will be
the first time more than half the student body has viewed these pieces by Thomas Moran,
Albert Bierstadt and others.”
Dr. Hudson is a founding member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and holds degrees
from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and the University of Arkansas for
Medical Sciences in Little Rock. He has led medical school programs for heart surgery
and has taught, conducted research and developed surgical facilities and programs
for several universities, including UAMS.
Regular gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on weekdays. For more information about this
exhibit, contact Donnie Copeland at [email protected] or (870) 245-5559.
