recital is free and open to the public.
“Often, professional musicians are told exactly what music to play and when to play
it, as well as how to play it by conductors,” Lewis said. “So it is wonderful to be
able to choose my favorite solo musical compositions to perform.”
The program will open with “Prelude No. 3” by Christopher Deane. It will also include
“Blues for Gilbert” by Mark Glentworth and a tour-de-force marimba solo titled “Shadow
Chasers” by Michael Burritt, in addition to “Another New Riq” by Michael Williams
and “Stop Speaking” by Andy Akiho. The concert will conclude with Joseph Green’s “Xylophonia,”
a fun, fast ragtime number from the 1930s.
“I hope that the audience will enjoy what they hear, be moved emotionally and have
their preconceptions expanded regarding what percussionists and percussion instruments
are capable of creating in a solo musical context,” Lewis stated.
In his role as assistant professor of music, Lewis teaches Applied Percussion, Percussion
Techniques and Music History courses. He also directs the Percussion Ensemble, Tiger
Marching Band Drum Line and Tiger Steel Drum Band. Lewis holds a Doctor of Musical

of Music in percussion performance from Florida State University and a Bachelor of
Instrumental Music Education from Furman University. He is an active member of the
international Percussive Arts Society and the College Music Society and is an artist-educator
for Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets, Dynasty/Bergerault keyboard percussion
instruments, Black Swamp concert percussion instruments and Evans drum heads.
Lewis has performed as timpanist-percussionist with many professional symphony orchestras
and is an avid chamber musician and collaborator. His scholarly activities include
published articles in Percussive Notes, a music appreciation textbook titled MusiConnections and Musical Reference Services Quarterly and research presentations at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention
