JSThe Ouachita Baptist University Department of Language and Literature will host alumnus John Sivils to speak on campus about his experience in law school. He will speak at its “Think Odd, It’s Not Friday” lunch meeting. The event, co-sponsored by the Ouachita Pre-Law Society, will be held Monday, March 12, at noon in the Ouachita Commons Alumni Room and is open to the public.

The event is based on the department’s “Think Odd, It’s Friday” lunch meeting, where every odd Friday students and faculty gather to discuss topics of interest.

“Guest speakers will come and talk, or a student or faculty member will present on a topic,” said Dr. Doug Sonheim, chair of the Department of Language and Literature and holder of the Clarence and Bennie Sue Anthony Chair of Bible and Humanities. “John will be talking to students about law school, how to get in and how to thrive once you are there. He’s going to be very encouraging and very practical.”

Sivils worked at Medlock Law Firm in Arkadelphia his senior year of college before graduating from Ouachita in 2017 with a degree in English. He currently attends law school at Southern Methodist University in Dallas and made the Dean’s List his first semester.

“I’m excited to come back to my alma mater to share my experience at Southern Methodist University Law,” Sivils said. “Current Ouachita students who are even slightly interested in law school are encouraged to come hear about what the life of a first-year law student looks like and get tips on how to prepare for the unique challenges of legal education.”
