Ouachita hosts Beverly Buys’ “Traces That Remain” exhibit through Nov. 16
October 17, 2018 - William Goodson
Ouachita Baptist University’s Department of Art and Design is hosting a photography
exhibit by guest artist Beverly Buys through Nov. 16. Buys’ exhibit, “Traces That
Remain,” is free and open to the public. It will be on display in the Rosemary Gossett
Adams Gallery on the first floor of Moses-Provine Hall.
Buys is a native and current resident of Hot Springs, Ark. She said she prides herself
in capturing distinctive photos that can “hold their own” on a wall with other works
of art. In 2011, Buys began challenging herself in this way with her series “Delta
in Blue,” a study of the Arkansas Delta Region.
Buys prints her photography with a chemical process known as cyanotype, which varies
in shades of blue and brown. This provides her photos with a variety of color. Buys’
process can be physically seen in her prints through the stains, drips and rough edges
of the prints, a style that she considers “painterly.”
Donnie Copeland, associate professor and chair of Ouachita’s Adams Department of Art
and Design, described “Traces That Remain” as a journey full of adventure.
“Buys goes on a journey to find her subject matter, which is a deliberate part of
her work,” Copeland said. “Then, in terms of making each piece, she has a specific
set of problems to resolve, each requiring unique solutions. None of what she is doing
is automated or fast. I see this kind of making and problem solving as another kind
of adventure that her work involves.”
Buys received a B.S.E. in art education from Henderson State University in 1977, an
M.A. in photography from the University of Little Rock at Arkansas in 1994 and an
M.F.A. in photography from the University of Memphis in 1996. She served from 1997-2014
in various instructional roles in Henderson State University’s Department of Art and
was HSU’s Russell Fine Arts Gallery director for more than 10 years.
The exhibit is located on the first floor of Rosemary Gossett Adams Gallery in Ouachita’s
Moses-Provine Hall. The galleries are open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5
p.m. For more information, contact Donnie Copeland at [email protected] or (870) 245-5559.
