Ouachita Baptist University music faculty members Dr. Mary Chung and Dr. Carlos Feller appeared as guest artists at the Clínicas Instrumentales Festival held in Cartagena, Colombia, last fall. An international orchestral music and opera festival, the event is an educational project for music students as well as professional musicians.

The 2018 festival reached over 300 music students from both Latin American countries and the U.S. Activities of the festival included masterclasses, ensemble rehearsals and daily faculty concerts, and this year’s event also featured renowned artists from Argentina, Australia, Colombia, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, Romania and Russia.

“Dr. Chung and I encountered students playing at a very high level, who came to classes with a smile on their faces, and were very receptive to our feedback and instruction,” said Dr. Carlos Feller, visiting assistant professor of music at Ouachita. “The joy of making music together with people from different parts of the world is extremely rewarding and keeps us motivated to refine our skills and share our craft with audiences of a variety of backgrounds.” Dr. Mary Chung is assistant professor of music at Ouachita.

Chung and Feller were invited as guest artists to teach both students and professional musicians, as well as to perform. Chung gave daily piano masterclasses, coached instrumental chamber music ensembles and worked with students who were participating in the opera workshop. Feller taught daily flute masterclasses and coached the flute sections of the orchestra and band.

Chung and Feller also performed as a duo during a recital featuring 20th century music for flute and piano. The couple has performed internationally in Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, France, Honduras, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Switzerland.

“Ouachita has been extremely supportive of our performances in events at the national and international level,” Feller said. “We are encouraged to continue sharing, through concerts and masterclasses, the wonderful things that are happening here on campus in the School of Fine Arts and Division of Music.”
