Destiny Diaz won the first David Glaze Music Competition, held Thursday, April 28, at Ouachita Baptist University. Sponsored by the Division of Music in Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts, the competition featured performances from outstanding students in vocal and instrumental music performance programs at Ouachita.
Diaz is a senior instrumental music education major from Malvern, Ark. She received a $1,000 award for her winning performance on flute of “Allegretto Malincolico” by Francis Poulenc and “Fantasie, Op. 79” by Gabriel Fauré.
“I feel so thankful for the opportunity I had to be a part of this competition,” Diaz said. “It’s an honor to play alongside such incredible musicians.”
Competition finalists – each awarded $500 – were Craig Crawford, a junior instrumental music performance major form Texarkana, Texas, on saxophone; Lane Dunman, a sophomore instrumental music performance major from Cash, Ark., on clarinet; Meredith Medford, a junior music industry and communications & media/strategic communications double major from Bryant, Ark., soprano vocalist; Isabella Owen, a junior musical theatre major from Jonesboro, Ark., soprano vocalist; and Andrew Pierce, a freshman biology and music double major from Benton, Ark., on piano.
Collaborative pianists throughout the competition were Kristen La Madrid, Susan Monroe and Phyllis Walker.
The David Glaze Music Competition is slated to become an annual event for Ouachita’s Division of Music. It is named for David Glaze, a Ouachita alumnus who serves as director of music ministries at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Little Rock. Glaze has performed as a guest piano soloist with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the ASO Chamber Orchestra, Ballet Arkansas and the Little Rock Winds. He is a past recipient of the Arkansas Federation of Music Club’s Outstanding Church Musician of the Year award and is the founding conductor and artistic director of the River City Men’s Chorus.
In Fall 2005, an endowed music scholarship was established at Ouachita in Glaze’s honor.
