The Rosemary Gossett Adams Department of Art & Design in Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts is hosting exhibits featuring paper-mache and screen prints through Sept. 30 in the Adams Gallery of Moses-Provine Hall. Admission is free and open to the public, and after-hours access is available by appointment.

“Germinal,” a sculptural installation exhibit, is found on the first floor, while “Estamos Aqui,” an exhibit of prints by Latino artists, is located in the second-floor gallery.

“Germinal” by Kara Gunter was made specifically for this exhibition and space. It captures her love of creating sculptures using materials and techniques like paper-mache, spray foam and packing tape.

“The works are selected to give our campus and community a breadth of different styles and artistic mediums,” said Carey Roberson, associate professor of art and design at Ouachita. “There is a broad scope of ideas and purposes behind them. Kara’s installation is a fantastic illustration of this.”

Gunter employs a playful visual aesthetic to explore the idea of tragedy, and that growth comes through trials by fire.

“Estamos Aqui: We Are Here” was curated by Brad Cushman, former art gallery director and curator of exhibits at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. It features serigraphs, or screen prints, created by 16 Latino and Chicano artists. Each print is made with 10 or more colors, which is a labor-intensive process. The collection reflects the experiences of these artists living and working in the United States and other countries.

Roberson noted, “It is through exhibitions such as this that we can begin to learn about art from underrepresented cultures and see things from a different perspective.”

Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Fridays. For more information and special appointments, contact Carey Roberson at [email protected] or (870)245-4655.
