Lane Dunman named winner of Second Annual David Glaze Music Competition

Lane Dunman, a sophomore instrumental music education major from Cash, Ark., won the Second Annual David Glaze Music Competition at Ouachita Baptist University. Held on Thursday, April 27, in McBeth Recital Hall, the competition featured performances from five finalists representing various music disciplines in Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts.

“Of the several performances I’ve been involved in at Ouachita, this is my favorite program of music I’ve prepared,” Dunman said. “I feel that it gave me an opportunity to relax and focus more on musicality and quality of sound – what I think are my two biggest strengths as a musician – rather than technical difficulty.”

In addition to the $500 prize awarded to all finalists, Dunman earned an additional $1,000 prize for his performances of “Clarinet Sonata in F Minor, Op. 120, No. 1” by Johannes Brahms and “Suite from the Victorian Kitchen Garden” by Paul Reade.

Other finalists included Brandon Holloway, a sophomore vocal performance major from Little Rock, Ark.; Isabella Owen, a senior musical theatre major from Jonesboro, Ark.; Andrew Pierce, a sophomore music and biology double major from Benton, Ark.; and Brooke Wright, a sophomore community & family services and music double major from Gilmer, Texas.

“As finalists, we feel like we’re all on equal ground and it’s much more inviting, almost a group recital rather than a competition,” Dunman said. “I feel extremely honored and humbled to have been able to perform alongside who I feel are the best musicians in the department.”

The competition was initiated and sponsored by Ouachita alumnus David A. Glaze of Little Rock. Glaze earned a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance as well as Bachelor and Master of Music Education degrees in choral music from Ouachita, where an endowed music scholarship was established in his name in 2005. He serves as director of music volunteers at CARTI Cancer Center in Little Rock.

A past recipient of the Arkansas Federation of Music Club’s Outstanding Church Musician of the Year award, Glaze is founding conductor and artistic director of the River City Men’s Chorus. He has overseen the chorus’ programming, rehearsals and presentations for 19 years, coordinating regular season concerts and international tours including a performance at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Glaze has performed as a guest piano soloist with the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra, the ASO Chamber Orchestra, Ballet Arkansas and the Little Rock Winds.
