Sand Volleyball Tournament Rules

  •  Games will be played 4 on 4.  No minimum or maximum team size.
  • The gender make-up of your team does not matter.
  • Names must be on the roster at start of tournament to be eligible to play.
  • Tournament is limited to 8 teams.

  • Rock, Paper, Scissors will be used to decide which team elects to serve or receive, and the opponent will decide which side they want.
  • The team not serving first in the game shall serve first in the second game.
  • If a third game is necessary you will “re-farkle”.

  • There will be no referees.  Play is self-officiated by both teams.  Any disputed points can be replayed.
  • Matches consist of a best-of-three games series (10,10,10).
  • Games will be rally scored. (you don’t have to be serving to get points)
  • All games will use a win-by-two format.  The games will cap at 15.
  • Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts of the ball in order to return the ball to the opponent’s area.  Blocks do not count as a contact.
  • Blocking or attacking a serve is illegal. A team may return a serve in one hit but it must go UPWARD in direction.
  • Serves (or any other shot) that hit the net are in play.
  • All passes must be clearly contacted, not thrown or lifted.
  • A player may not hit the ball twice in a row (a block does not count).
  • Any ball landing on the line is good.
  • The server must stand entirely behind the end line. 
  • Player’s may reach over the net and block a ball that is coming over, but must not make contact before the offensive player, and may not interfere with a ball that would otherwise not have come over the net.
  • Players may not contact the net during a hit or block. Incidental contact is allowed.
  • Teams must rotate clockwise after receiving a side-out.  Substitutions must be made in a rotating manner starting at the front left of the net.
  • Players may cross the center line as long as there is no interference with the opposing player.
  • Players may be removed from the game for unsportsmanlike behavior.
  • Players may kick the ball as one of their contacts.
