From the "Ouachitonian": Drew Harris
January 01, 2020
Touchdowns, tailgates, Tigers. For many, football season is one of the best times of the year. For Drew Harris, football was not just a season out of the year, but one of his favorite time commitments.
Junior Drew Harris, a kinesiology major from Benton, grew up in a football family. His dad was a high school football coach, and he and his little brother grew up learning and loving to play the game. Harris started playing football in the sixth grade and pursued a football career ever since.
Harris’ love of the game showed over the year, along with his determination, teamwork and talent. Harris played for Benton High School, where he was named Hooten’s Male Athlete of the Year. He also helped lead his team to a winning season his senior year.
Harris continued to give the sport his all when he arrived to play football at Ouachita. While helping lead the Tigers to success, he received the honors of GAC All-Conference twice. He was second in the nation and first in the GAC with total touchdowns, scoring 26 in the season.
Along with the possibility of breaking a record, Harris had a little more motivation going into Battle of the Ravine. His younger brother was a freshman football player at Henderson State University. Harris’ brother was a red shirt, so they did not get to play each other.
“There was a little family division during that week, but it’s pretty cool,” Harris said.
Harris and his younger brother grew up learning the love of the game together and even played football together Harris’ senior year, but they were always on the same team. Harris looked forward to the opportunity to play against his little brother.
“I’m not really sure what side my parents are going to sit on next year. Probably mine, though,” said Harris.
With the help of those 26 touchdowns, the Tigers won conference and made it to the first round of playoffs for a snowy game in Michigan. Harris could not wait for senior year with Tiger football. Harris plans to continue his football career with coaching and possibly even going to the NFL Scouting Combine to follow his dream of going pro. For Harris, football was a part of his life, and he will continue to leave his legacy.
