Giving thanks for Ouachita memories

January 01, 2020

This Thanksgiving season has arrived near the end of my final semester at Ouachita. That has prompted me to reflect on what this incredible university has offered me during these past three and a half years. What makes this place so full of life? I’ve narrowed it down to the three things for which I’m most thankful. During this season of thanks, you may want to take a few moments to compile your own list. Here’s mine:

1. The Professors

The first thing that comes to my mind when I think about Ouachita is the life-impacting professors who have crossed my path along the way. Ouachita is a unique university when it comes to faculty and staff. With a willingness to help at all costs, invitations to dinner in their homes and an eagerness to expand my range of knowledge, my professors have been a constant encouragement to my self-development throughout my college career. They truly are a gift that I will cherish forever!

2. The Ministry

Service truly is a way of life at Ouachita through the Elrod Center, Campus Ministries and many off-campus endeavors. Personally, my deep involvement in Tiger Serve Day has changed the way I view those around me and how I intentionally serve those in need. God has shaped my heart for others and taught me how to love and lead humbly with several opportunities that I could only experience at Ouachita. Attending a college with a true heart for spiritual growth has challenged me to live with purpose as I am about to approach the “real” world! (Eek!)

3. The Friends

I never went through rush or pledged a club, but friendships at Ouachita are always abounding! Whether I’m walking through the Student Center hearing “Hello!” and “How are you?” or meeting new classmates who become real-life friends, Ouachita cultivates relationships that make you feel a part of the Tiger community. With my memories starting in Frances Crawford (Shoutout to my freshman suitemates), to studying abroad in Liverpool, England, during my sophomore year to learning to cook in the Ouachita apartments (Sorry for burning popcorn so much, Katie and Staci), I always have made friends along the way. What a unique place to call home!

You might be able to tell I’m a little thankful for the school that has given me opportunities to lead, learn from and befriend many incredible people in this town of Arkadelphia. I never knew what to expect from college, but as I look back on these past few years, I see that Ouachita was exactly what I needed whether I realized that or not. A school that knows you, loves you, provides for you and supports you is hard not to be thankful for! Here’s to the last few weeks of my Ouachita experience!
