OBU Division of Music presents Garrett, Grant, Keck & Scott in a faculty recital

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present Dr. Margaret Garrett,
Kristin Grant, Dr. Ouida Keck and Heather Scott in a faculty recital on Tuesday, Sept.
22, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The recital is free
and open to the public.
Dr. Margaret Garrett, soprano, will be singing in collaboration with Heather Scott
on cello, Dr. Ouida Keck on piano and harpsichord and Kristin Grant on flute. Keck
and Scott will also present three cello and piano duets.
Garrett, Scott and Keck will open the recital with Beethoven’s “Come Draw We Round
a Cheerful Ring” and “On the Massacre of Glencoe.” They will be joined by Grant to
perform Bach’s “Bete aber auf dabei.”
Garrett and Keck will collaborate to present Handel’s “Tornami a vagheggiar,” and
then Scott will join Keck to present Saint-Saëns’ “The Swan.”
Also included in the recital will be Fauré’s “Après un rêve,” performed by Keck and
Scott, Strauss’ “Ich wollt’ ein Sträußlein binden” and “Als mir dein Leid erklang,”
performed by Garrett and Keck, Piazzolla’s “Le Grand Tango,” performed by Keck and
Scott and Lobos’ “Aria” from Bachianas Brasileiras, performed by Garrett, Keck and Scott.
Garrett, Keck and Scott will then perform Previn’s “Vocalise,” and Garrett and Keck
will conclude the recital with Schmidt’s “Something has Happened” and Shire’s “Baby,
Baby, Baby.”
An assistant professor of music and voice, Garrett is in her second year teaching
studio voice and vocal literature at Ouachita. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts
in Voice Performance degree from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master
of Music in Voice Performance degree from Indiana University and a Bachelor of Music
degree in Voice Performance from the North Carolina School of the Arts.
“I love that singing provides me with and outlet to express emotions that mere words
can’t express,” Garrett said. “I also love the challenge of learning new music and
the partnership of working with other musicians.” Garrett said she has been studying
voice since the age of 13.
Dr. Ouida Keck, professor of music at Ouachita, teaches applied piano, piano pedagogy
and piano ensemble. She has been at Ouachita for 25 years. She earned a Bachelors
of Music degree in Piano Performance degree from Ouachita, a Masters of Music in Piano
Performance degree from the University of Arkansas and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree
from the University of Iowa. Keck, an Arkadelphia native, said she enjoys “sharing
beautiful and meaningful music with others and collaborating with my colleagues.”
Heather Scott is an adjunct instructor in music at Ouachita and a cellist in the Arkansas
Symphony Orchestra. She and her husband, Dr. Sean Scott, assistant professor of history,
joined the Ouachita faculty in 2008.
Kristin Grant is an instructor of music at Ouachita. She earned a Bachelor of Music
degree at the University of Arizona and a Master of Music degree at the University
of North Texas.
