September 18, 2009 - Mallory George

Ouachita Baptist University will host internationally renowned flutist Tadeu Coelho in a guest recital on Saturday, Oct. 3. Coelho will also present a lecture and master class sponsored by OBU, The Hot Springs Flute Ensemble and Miyazaya Flutes. All events on Oct. 3 are free and open to the public and will take place in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall on Ouachita’s campus.

“Tadeu Coelho is a virtuoso flutist of international caliber,” said Kristin Grant, OBU instructor of music. “He shows musical artistry and captivating technique in his performance, and we are excited that he will be appearing in Arkansas.” Grant will conduct a flute choir session on Oct. 3 from 10–11:30 a.m. before Coelho’s performance at 1 p.m.

In Coelho’s 1 p.m. recital, he will be accompanied on the piano by Kazuo Murakami. At 3 p.m., following the recital, he will present the lecture, “Three Steps to Glory: A painless way to perform with confidence.” Coelho will then direct a master class from 4:15–6 p.m. Attendance at the master class is free.

Coelho has performed in music halls across the United States and internationally in countries including France, Italy, Germany, Russia, Japan, Korea, China and his native Brazil. He has recorded for numerous contemporary composers including Steven Block, Lawrence Dillon, Lawrence Fritts, Eduardo Gamboa and Todd Harris. Coelho has been featured in both national and international magazines and has served as a master class clinician worldwide.

Coelho will appear in a second concert at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4, at Art Church Studio, located at 301 Whittington Avenue in Hot Springs. This concert is free and will feature seminar attendees of all ages on C flute, alto flute, bass flute and piccolo in a large flute choir setting. Coelho will perform Mozart’s “Andante in C” with the seminar flute choir.
