Carter Harlan wins 8th annual Ouachita Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition

- Jessica StewartCarter Harlan, a sophomore music education major from Fayetteville, Ark., won the
eighth annual Ouachita Baptist University Wind and Percussion Concerto Competition
on Friday, Jan. 24.
The competition is open to outstanding Ouachita wind and percussion students, and
awards are chosen by three outside judges. The event is presented in a recital format,
with each student playing with piano accompaniment.
Harlan received a $500 cash award for his performance of “Concerto for Marimba and
String Orchestra” by Eric Ewazen on marimba. He was accompanied by Kristen LaMadrid,
an OBU staff accompanist. As first prize winner, Harlan also will have the opportunity
to perform as a featured instrumentalist with the OBU Wind Ensemble in the spring,
one of the highest honors awarded to Ouachita instrumentalists.
“Each year the event showcases outstanding wind and percussion students from Ouachita,”
said Kristin Grant, OBU assistant professor of music. “The students spend months preparing
for the competition.” Competing students put in personal practice time and spend additional
time rehearsing with their pianists to prepare for the competition.
Second place went to Lindsay Palmer, a sophomore music education major from Idabel,
Okla. Palmer performed on the trumpet “Allegro con Spirito” from the Johann Nepomuk
Hummel’s “Trumpet Concerto” and was accompanied by Susan Monroe, a staff accompanist.
Palmer received $300 as her second place prize.
Third place and a $200 prize went to Bret Steed, a senior music performance major
from Idabel, Okla. Steed performed "Colors" by Bert Appermont on trombone. He was
accompanied by Susan Monroe on piano.
Judges for this year’s competition included Susan Antonetti, instructor of flute at
the University of Arkansas at Little Rock; Amy Laursen, adjunct professor of horn
at Henderson State University; and Erick Saoud, percussionist with the Arkansas Symphony
Orchestra and teacher at Episcopal Collegiate School in Little Rock.
Other participants included Elizabeth Baker, a senior music performance major from
Grapevine, Texas; Drew Ervin, a junior music and computer science major from Springdale,
Ark.; and Allison King, a junior music major from Fort Worth, Texas.
