Ouachita Stories

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host Stacy Hawking and Jillian Turner in student recitals March 7. Both recitals will be held in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.

Turner, a vocal performance and piano major from Fort Worth, Texas, will present her junior voice recital at 11 a.m. She has earned a first place award in OBU’s Virginia Queen Piano Competition, a second place finish in the regional National Association of Teachers of Singing auditions and the Inner and Outer Beauty Award in the Miss Ouachita Baptist University Pageant. She also appeared as Adele in OBU Opera Theatre’s production of “Die Fledermaus/The Revenge of the Bat” by Johann Strauss.

Turner’s recital will include the following selections: “Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen” from Cantata No. 51 by J.S. Bach, “La Zingara (The Gypsy Maid)” by Gaetano Donizetti, “The Singer” by Michael Head, Stephen Sondheim’s “Green Finch and Linnet Bird” from Sweeney Todd, “Ah! Je veux vivre” from Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod and “Sous le dome épais” from Lakmé by Léo Delibes. She will be accompanied by OBU Staff Accompanist Phyllis Walker.

Hawking, a musical theatre major from Sherwood, Ark., will present her sophomore musical theatre recital at 2 p.m. She has been a member of Ouachita’s Concert Choir and Ouachita Sounds and has served as choreographer for Ouachita productions including A Festival of Christmas, Ouachita Sounds in Concert, A Year with Frog and Toad and Hello, Dolly! She also has performed in three mainstage productions at the Arkansas Repertory Theatre and participated in its Summer Musical Theatre Intensive program for aspiring young artists.

Hawking’s recital will include the following selections: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “As If We Never Said Goodbye” from Sunset Boulevard, a scene from Robert Coles’ “Cute Boys in Their Underpants Make It Big (in Show Business)”, Irving Berlin’s “I Love a Piano” from Stop! Look! Listen! and Alan Menken’s “I Wanna Be a Rockette” from Kicks: The Showgirl Musical.
