Ouachita senior Allan Bateman to present composition recital March 18

March 13, 2015 - McKenzie Cranford

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host Allan Bateman in his senior composition recital Wednesday, March 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. The recital is free and open to the public.

Bateman, a senior music theory and composition major from Perryville, Ark. will present pieces he has composed over the course of his time as a student. Several Ouachita students and faculty members will participate in the recital as vocalists and instrumentalists.

Bateman said he is “looking forward to hearing my music played by other people and sharing what I’ve created.” Noting that his professors and friends kept encouraging and helping him throughout the process, he added, “Without their guidance, encouragement, and especially their patience, I would not have made it to this point.”

The recital will begin with Bateman’s “Solo for Saxophone and Piano” in two movements, “Stuck Inside Myself” and “The Lying Ladder.” Dr. Caroline Taylor, professor of music, will perform on saxophone, and Susan Monroe, lecturer in music, will be on piano.

Next, the OBU Trombone Choir will perform “Shell Sea,” followed by five students performing “Forgiveness Via Vengeance.” Those performers will include: Nathan Bateman, a freshman instrumental music performance major from Perryville, Ark., on soprano saxophone; Allison King, a senior music major from Fort Worth, Texas; and Victoria White, a freshman accounting major from Powderly, Texas, on alto saxophone; Taylor Bascue, a sophomore Christian studies/Biblical studies major from Riverton, Wyo., on tenor saxophone; and Justin Massey, a junior instrumental music education major from Weatherford, Texas, on baritone saxophone.

The next piece performed will be “Confrontation,” featuring Tori Clark, a senior choral music education major from Bonnerdale, Ark., as mezzo soprano; Chris Hogan, a senior instrumental music education major from Bartlesville, Okla., on vibraphone; and Carter Harlan, a senior instrumental music education major from Fayetteville, Ark., on marimba.

Kristin Grant, assistant professor of music, and Elizabeth Baker, a senior instrumental performance and psychology double major from Grapevine, Texas, will then perform “Bound” on flute. They will be followed by the final performance, Ouachita Singers performing “Empty.”
