Ouachita to host pianist Cole Burger in concert March 2

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host pianist Dr. Cole Burger
in concert on Thursday, March 2, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine
Arts Center. The recital, which is part of Ouachita’s Guest Artist Series, is free
and open to the public.
Burger is an instructor in the College of Musical Arts at Bowling Green State University,
where he teaches and coordinates class piano and piano pedagogy. He holds degrees
in piano performance and economics from Northwestern University and the University
of Texas.
Burger will perform works from standard classical repertoire as well as works by living
modern composers. The program for the evening includes: “Prelude on F” and “Fugue
on A flat” by John S. Hilliard, a 1969 Ouachita graduate; “Prelude and Fugue in G
minor, BWV 885” by J.S. Bach; “Sonata No. 41 in A major, Hob. XVI: 26” by Franz Joseph
Haydn; “A Distant Voice of the Rain Forest (2005, rev. 2013)” by Ng Chong Lim; “Rapsodia
Nusantara No. 18 (2016)” by Ananda Sukarian; “4 Skazki, op. 26” by Nikolai Medtner;
and “RedLine (1999)” by Steven Bryant, a 1994 Ouachita graduate.
As a solo and collaborative pianist, Burger has performed throughout the U.S., Europe
and Asia, including Carnegie Hall’s Weill Recital Hall, Rome’s Teatro di Marcello,
the Romanian Athenaeum in Bucharest, the Goethe Institute in Bangkok, the American
Cathedral in Paris and the U.S. Ambassador’s Home in Malaysia.
Burger has won prizes at the American Protégé International Piano and Strings Competition,
Seattle International Piano Competition, the American Prize in Piano Performance and
the Janice K. Hodges Contemporary Piano Performance Competition.
Ouachita’s Guest Artist Series allows the university to invite musicians and artists
both nationally and internationally to share their arts on campus and in the community.
