Ouachita to host faculty showcase recital Sept. 12

- Sarah DavisOuachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts Division of Music will present its
annual Faculty Showcase Recital on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 7:30 p.m. The recital, which
will be held in McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center on Ouachita’s campus,
is free and open to the public.
Designed as a musical celebration in which faculty and collaborative pianists demonstrate
their love for music and performance, the recital will feature faculty members from
the three areas of Ouachita’s music program: instrumental, piano and voice.
“The recital gives folks an opportunity to get their heads out of the TV and social
media and enjoy live performances by some genuinely talented musicians,” said Dr.
Jon Secrest, Addie May Maddox Professor of Music and chair of the Department of Applied
Music. “It is our hope that folks from Ouachita and Arkadelphia will come and share
the joy of the performance and have fun.”
John Alec Briggs, lecturer in music, will sing “Skylark” by Johnny Mercer and Hoagy
Carmichael; Dr. Bruce Johnston, lecturer in music, will accompany him on guitar. Dr.
Lei Cai, professor of music, will present a piano performance of Judith L. Zaimont’s
“Impronta Digitale.” Dr. Carlos Feller, lecturer in music, and Dr. Mary Chung, assistant
professor of music, will perform, on flute and piano, "Allegretto poco mosso" from
Sonata in A Major by Cesar Franck. Dr. Margaret Garrett, associate professor of music, will sing Ned
Rorem’s “Alleluia” and George and Ira Gershwin’s “Blow, Gabriel, Blow.” Dr. Ryan Lewis,
associate professor of music, will play "Bodran Dance" and "Recital Suite for Djembe,
Vivace (in the style of Lenjengo)" by Michael Williams on djembe. Bart Morrison, lecturer
in music, will play "Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C Major, Bux WV 137" by Buxtehude
on organ. Dr. Becky Morrison, assistant professor of music, will sing "Oi Ayai" from
Chants d'Auvergne, Series Four by Joseph Canteloube, along with Chung on piano. Dr. Glenda Secrest, professor of
music, and Dr. Jon Secrest will perform Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt’s “A Man and
A Woman” from 110 in the Shade and Mel Brooks’ “The Song that Goes Like This” from Spamalot. Dr. Heather Thayer, assistant professor of music, will play "Call and Response"
by Randall Faust on horn. Phyllis Walker will serve as collaborative pianist for the
recital.
