Award-winning baritone André Chiang to perform at Ouachita Oct. 1.September 26, 2018 - Gracie Stover

Ouachita Baptist University’s School of Fine Arts welcomes National Federation of Music Clubs Young Artist winner André Chiang to perform on campus Monday, Oct. 1. The concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Mabee Fine Arts Center’s McBeth Recital Hall. This is a free event open to the public.

Chiang will have multiple engagements in Arkansas as a part of a statewide tour, but Ouachita has been honored with being the opening concert for the past several years.

“The benefit of hosting this concert each year is the opportunity to hear the best young artist in the nation,” said Dr. Gary Gerber, dean of Ouachita’s School of Fine Arts. “These performers are just a few years older than our students, so they can hopefully relate to them and understand the work ethic and dedication it takes to achieve the level of performance that the young artists bring each year.”

A native of Alabama, Chiang completed his Bachelor of Music degree at the University of South Alabama before earning a Master of Music degree at the Manhattan School of Music. He currently resides in Baton Rouge, La., where he is pursuing a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in vocal performance. Chiang’s resume includes stage, recital and concert work. A few upcoming engagements include performances with the New Orleans Symphony, Eastern Shore Hall Choral Society, Mississippi Opera and Carnegie.

The concert will host a variety of musical selections, including Georges Bizet’s “Votre Toast” from Carmen, Cole Porter’s “So In Love” from Kiss Me Kate, and “If I Can’t Love Her” from Beauty and the Beast. The show concludes with a medley from the 1965 musical Man of La Mancha by Mitch Leigh.
