Ouachita to hold Symphonic Band concert on March 7

- Ashly StracenerThe Ouachita Baptist University Symphonic Band will perform in concert on Thursday,
March 7, at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Performing Arts Center on Ouachita’s campus. The concert
is free and open to the public.
Composed of both music and non-music majors, the Symphonic Band is a collection of
woodwind, brass and percussion instruments that allows students to perform music written
for a concert setting. Sarah Rush, a sophomore Spanish and communications & media
double major from Little Rock, Ark., said she appreciates the opportunity to participate
in the musical group, though music is not her major.
“I love getting to make music on a weekly basis,” said Rush, who plays the flute.
“It’s fun to work with other musicians as a team.”
“I feel the students grow as musicians and people when they come together to perform
with others,” said Dr. Craig Hamilton, Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and
director of bands at Ouachita.
The evening’s program will include “Tharsos” by Jeff Jordan, “Hebrides Suite” by Clare
Grundman and the selection “Joy” from “Awakening” by Joseph Curiale. The Symphonic
Band will also perform “Perthshire Majesty” by Samuel R. Hazo, “Scenes from Terezin”
by Jack Stamp and “In the Forrest of the King” by Pierre La Plante. The concert will
conclude with Rick Kirby’s “Echoes in the Woods.”
“There are lots of pieces with different styles, so you’ll find there’s something
for everyone to enjoy,” Rush said.
