Ouachita to host clarinetist Chelsea Villanueva in concert April 17

Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host clarinetist Chelsea Villanueva
in concert on Wednesday, April 17, at 8 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall in
Mabee Fine Arts Center. The concert, which is part of Ouachita’s Guest Artist series,
is free and open to the public.
Villanueva, a Ouachita graduate, is a multiple woodwind performer and teacher in the
Rogue Valley in southern Oregon. She has performed in many musicals including “Avenue
Q” with the Oregon Cabaret Theatre and “Bonnie and Clyde” with the Collaborative Theater
Project, and she has performed as a guest with the Britt Festival, the Rogue Valley
Symphony and the Southern Oregon Chamber Choir. Villanueva is a member of the Southern
Oregon Repertory Singers and an alumna of the Nief Norf Summer Festival. She also
has worked with composers Mark Applebaum and Judd Greenstein at the Oregon Fringe
Festivals of 2017 and 2018, respectively.
“It is such an honor to have this opportunity to bring Chelsea Villanueva back to
Ouachita to perform for our students and community. She is an exceptionally gifted
musician,” said Dr. Caroline Taylor, professor of music at Ouachita and Villanueva’s
former clarinet instructor.
The program for the evening includes: “Duft for solo clarinet” by Kaija Saariaho,
“Sonata” by Paul Hindemith, “Clarinet Sonata” by Jennifer Higdon and “Three Pieces
for Clarinet Solo” by Igor Stravinsky.
Villanueva holds a Master of Music in multiple woodwind performance from Southern
Oregon University and a Bachelor of Music in clarinet performance from Ouachita Baptist
University.
