Ouachita’s Maggie Garrett to present “Caffeinated” recital Sept. 25

Dr. Maggie Garrett, associate professor of music at Ouachita Baptist University, will present a musical theatre recital titled “Caffeinated” on Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall in Mabee Fine Arts Center. The recital is free and open to the public.

The program will contain a diverse variety of styles including classical selections by Johann Sebastian Bach and Giuseppe Verdi, as well as musical theatre selections from Flora, the Red Menace, Pins and Needles and Big Fish, among others.

“I'm putting myself in my students' shoes and performing a BMMT (Bachelor of Music in musical theatre) senior recital using the same parameters they must use,” Garrett said.

Garrett’s keyboard collaborator will be Dr. Mary Chung, assistant professor of music, on piano and harpsichord. Other faculty assisting in the performance include John Alec Briggs, lecturer in music at Ouachita; Dr. Carlos Feller, visiting assistant professor of music, on flute; and Dr. Laura Storm, professor of voice at Henderson State University, singing soprano.

Garrett will begin her recital with Bach’s “Ah! How Sweet the Coffee Tastes,” followed by Verdi’s “Stornello.” Next, she will present Erik Satie’s “I Want You;” Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “O you, my grain-field!;” Antonín Dvořák’s “Song to the Moon” from Rusalka; and Gioacchino Rossini’s “Duetto buffo di due Gatti.” Garrett will then perform John Kander’s “Sing Happy” from Flora, The Red Menace; Harold Rome’s “Sing Me a Song with Social Significance” from Pins and Needles; and Andrew Lippa’s “I Don’t Need a Roof” from Big Fish. To conclude the recital, Garrett will present Irene Sankoff and David Hein’s “Me and the Sky” from Come From Away; a dramatic presentation from Act 4, Scene 2 of William Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor; and Jerry Herman’s “Bosom Buddies” from Mame.

Garrett’s instructors are Dr. Arnold Rawls, a tenor with the Metropolitan Opera; Stephanie Murry, assistant professor of theatre arts at Ouachita; and Stacy Hawking, fine arts administrator.

Garrett joined the Ouachita music faculty in 2008. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in voice performance from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, a Master of Music degree in voice performance from Indiana University-Bloomington and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in voice performance from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, as well as high school concentrations in voice and harp from Baltimore School for the Arts.

Garrett has won the Kentucky National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Artist Awards competition and has received the NATS Young Leaders Award. She also was named “Most Valuable Professor” by Ouachita’s Honors Council.

She is a member of NATS, National Opera Association, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity, Arkadelphia Philharmonic Club and the Musical Theatre Educators’ Alliance.
