Dr. Sara Hubbard, professor of chemistry and holder of the Nell I. Mondy Chair of Chemistry in the Patterson School of Natural Sciences at Ouachita Baptist University, has been elected chair of the Southwest Region of the American Chemical Society.

“We’re excited to see Dr. Hubbard recognized for her leadership abilities and know she will be a great addition to the ACS executive board,” said Dr. Tim Knight, professor of biology and dean of the School of Natural Sciences.

According to Ruth Hathaway, immediate past chair of the region’s executive board, the ACS is one of the world’s largest scientific societies; it engages 155,000 members from every degree level in all fields of chemistry, chemical engineering and related areas. There are more than 7,000 members in the Southwest Region, which encompasses Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas, Oklahoma and parts of Mississippi and New Mexico.

Hubbard has been a member of the ACS since graduate school at the University of Wyoming, where she earned a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at Wichita State University before joining the Ouachita faculty in 2009.

Prior to her election, she served for seven years as the regional vice-chair and for multiple years at the local level, including roles as secretary, chair-elect and chair. Her newly elected position includes leadership of regional meetings and the steering committee. Hubbard also serves as the National Chemistry Week outreach coordinator for the Central Arkansas section.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with so many talented chemists who care about sharing chemistry with their communities,” Hubbard said.
