Purpose:

To provide training and encouragement for bi-vocational pastors and preachers interested in communicating the truth of Scripture more effectively.

Outcome:

The Preaching Clinic will provide three key things:

• Three teaching sessions designed to address acute preaching needs particular to bi-vocational preachers/pastors
• Resources to improve content and effectiveness of sermons
• An opportunity to enjoy the company of other pastors and preachers in similar situations
  
  

Schedule:

10 a.m. – Coffee, Welcome and Orientation – “(Re)Claiming the Joy of Preaching,” led by Jeremy Greer

10:15 a.m. – Session 1 – “The Biblical Sermon,” led by Terry Carter

The truth is that not all sermons are biblical. This session will consider what makes a sermon biblical, how is it developed and why is it so important to the spiritual growth of the congregation.

11:00 a.m. – Break

11:10 a.m. – Session 2 – “Making the Most of Your Time: Sermon Preparation as a Multi-vocational Pastor,” led by Bobby Clark

How does one prepare a biblical and compelling sermon when one feels pulled in different directions by competing responsibilities? This session will address a key issue for the bi-vocational pastor: utilizing time effectively.

11:55 a.m. – Lunch – Berry-Peeples Bible Building Room 217 with table discussions and Q&A

1:00 p.m. – Session 3 – “The Sermon Presentation and ‘Dispelling Some Myths of Preaching,’” led by Rex Horne

This session will explore some of the mechanics of preaching as well as some myths about preaching. Overriding these matters is an understanding of the incredible blessing and privilege of being called to preach.

1:55 p.m. – Conclusion

About the Presenters:

Terry Carter, professor emeritus of Christian ministry at Ouachita Baptist University, taught preaching for 35 years and co-authored the preaching textbook. Additionally, he has served as a pastor on the mission field and an interim pastor for 31 churches in Arkansas and Germany.

Bobby Clark has served as the bi-vocational pastor of Abbott Baptist Church for over 30 years. Throughout his time pastoring, he has owned and operated his own construction company. He is a trusted voice for bi-vocational pastors, speaking at conferences and having served on the SBC’s Bivocational and Smaller Membership Church Council.

Rex Horne has been pastoring churches and preaching for 52 years, currently serving Hope Church in Little Rock. He also served as the fifteenth president of Ouachita Baptist University and the executive director of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention.
