November 22, 2019 - Gracie Stover
Ouachita Baptist University will present A Service of Lessons and Carols on Tuesday, Dec. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital Hall located in Mabee Fine Arts Center. The service is free and open to the public.
A Service of Lessons and Carols is a favorite Ouachita Christmas tradition. Ouachita faculty, staff and students will present the lessons, a series of Scripture readings from Genesis, Isaiah, Luke, Matthew and John, and the Ouachita Singers, Women’s Chorus and Ouachita Brass Ensemble will lead the audience in the singing of carols. Those attending are invited to sing the carols at specified times during the service.
“Lessons and Carols is a traditional service that began in England with nine lessons and nine carols,” said Dr. Gary Gerber, dean of the School of Fine Arts and director of choral activities. “The Scripture readings tell about Christ’s birth and coming, and in between each lesson is a carol. This year they are incorporating a brass ensemble, and the organ is the principal instrument.”
“O Come, All Ye Faithful,” “The First Noel,” “Angels We Have Heard on High,” “Away in a Manger” and “Joy to the World” are a few of the carols to be sung this year.
This year’s student scripture readers include: Rylee Roberts, a senior communications & media/integrated communications major from Grand Junction, Colo.; and Faith Twyford, a senior graphic design major from Hot Springs, Ark.
Faculty and staff readers include: Ian Cosh, Vice President for Community and International Engagement; Dr. Rob Hewell, director of the Worship Studies Program and director of online learning initiatives; Dr. Jon Secrest, Addie Mae Maddox Professor of Music; Dr. Jeff Root, dean of the School of Humanities and Huckabee School of Education; Dr. Stan Poole, Vice President for Academic Affairs; and René Zimny, assistant professor of Art and Design.
Ensembles performing include: Ouachita Singers, directed by Joshua Brown, instructor of music and director of choral activities; Women’s Chorus, directed by Natilan Crutcher, visiting assistant professor of music, and Dr. Gary Gerber; and the Ouachita Brass Ensemble, directed by Dr. Craig Hamilton, Lena Goodwin Trimble Professor of Music and director of bands. Congregational carols will be accompanied by organist Jerry Westenkuehler.
