Ouachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will present the Women’s Chorus and
Ouachita Singers in their spring concert Thursday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in McBeth
Recital Hall. The concert is free and open to the public.
The concert will begin with performances by the Women’s Chorus, including Alice Parker’s
arrangement of the traditional hymn “Hark I Hear the Harps Eternal,” Daniel Jackson’s
arrangement of the South African greeting song “Hlohonolofatsa” and Dan Forrest’s
arrangement of the hymn “Lord of the Small.” Next, they will perform Craig Hella Johnson’s
arrangement of Carly Simon’s “Let the River Run,” “Oceans and Stars” by Amy F. Bernon
and Randy Newman’s “When She Loved Me” from Toy Story 2 before concluding with Kevin T. Padworski’s arrangement of the traditional Easter
text “Vidi Aquam.”
The concert will then transition to performances by the Ouachita Singers. To begin,
the Ouachita Singers will perform Giacomo Puccini’s “Humming Chorus” from Madame Butterfly, Giuseppe Verdi’s “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves” from Nabucco and Gilbert and Sullivan’s “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” from Pirates of Penzance. The Ouachita Singers will then present Henry Purcell’s “Dido’s Lament” from Dido Aeneas and Giuseppe Verdi’s “Anvil Chorus” from Il Trovatore before concluding with Jacques Offenbach’s “Neighbor’s Chorus” from La Jolie Parfumeuse.
“The Ouachita Singers’ portion of the spring concert will involve six of the most
popular opera choruses from the 17th and 18th century,” said Dr. Gary Gerber, dean of the School of Fine Arts, professor of music
and conductor of the Ouachita Singers. “The audience will recognize this music, which
has been popularized by its use in film, television shows and commercials. The history
behind each chorus will be shared with the audience to give context to its use in
the opera.”
Becky Morrison, assistant professor of music, will conduct Women’s Chorus. Accompanists
for the concert are Dr. Mary Chung, assistant professor of music at Ouachita, and
Elsen Portugal, accompanist for Ouachita’s Division of Music.
