Ouachita to host Arkansas Saxophone Quartet in guest recital Sept. 26

- Ashly StracenerOuachita Baptist University’s Division of Music will host the Arkansas Saxophone Quartet
in a guest recital on Thursday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in Ouachita’s McBeth Recital
Hall. The performance is free of charge and open to the public.
Members of the quartet include: Dr. Brent Bristow, from Arkansas State University-Beebe,
on tenor saxophone; Dr. Jackie Lamar, retired from University of Central Arkansas,
on baritone saxophone; Dr. Caroline Taylor, professor of music at Ouachita, on alto
saxophone; and Dr. Matthew Taylor, from University of Central Arkansas, on soprano
saxophone.
“The Arkansas Saxophone Quartet is proudly celebrating its 12th anniversary with a series of concerts around the state,” said Dr. Caroline Taylor,
a founding member of the group. “We will be performing a really fun and challenging
program with music from the 1800s to new music composed in 2015.”
The quartet will begin their performance with Maurice Ravel’s “Le Tombeau de Couperin.”
Next, the quartet will play Jean Absil’s “Pieces en Quatour, Op. 53,” followed by
Jonathan Leshnoff’s “Four Dances.” The program will conclude with Franz Liszt’s “Hungarian
Rhapsody No. 2.”
The Arkansas Saxophone Quartet was established in 2007 by saxophone professors from
three Arkansas universities. The group is adept at a variety of repertoire styles
ranging from transcriptions to avant-garde contemporary music. Their performances
include international conferences, universities and special events.
Some of the group’s appearances include multiple performances at the U.S. Navy Band
International Saxophone Symposium in Fairfax, Va., and being featured at the Conference
on Arts and Humanities in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the World Saxophone Congress in St.
Andrews, Scotland.
