Twenty-four letters written by Captain Ambrose (1835-1896), Confederate States of America Army, to his sister, Nannie Dawley, Kentucky, during the Civil War. Ambrose penned all but one of the letters while a prisoner-of-war at the Ohio State Prison and Fort Delaware.

Methodist Episcopal Church publications and programs originally sealed in the cornerstone of the Amity [Clark County, AR] church building in 1892. Organizational records, including governance documents, annual reports, event calendars and lists of officers, of the Arkansas WMU, a branch of a national auxiliary of the Southern Baptist Convention. The WMU was founded in 1888. WMU is the largest Protestant missions organization for women in the world. Records also include manuscripts written by Lila Pye, a state officer; correspondence between Una Roberts Lawrence and the Osage Indian Baptist Church mission in Pawhuska, Oklahoma; biographies of Baptist leaders; photographs and photograph albums; and scrapbooks about the WMU and various youth camps, including the Royal Ambassadors, the Girls’ Auxiliary, and the Young Men’s Conference.

Includes sermon notes from Wynne [AR] Baptist Church (1953-1960), the Booneville Tuberculosis Sanitorium (1961-1965), and Mixon Baptist Church [Booneville, AR] (1966-1972). Also includes notes for funerals, funeral and wedding indexes, artifacts, plaques, painting of Wynne Baptist Church, certificates and diplomas, and family Bible. Baker (1898-1985) attended Ouachita Baptist College in the 1920s and was ordained in 1924. After receiving his master’s degree in theology, he pastored numerous Baptist churches around Arkansas, including those at Hazen, DeValls Bluff, Lake Village, DeQueen, Wynne and Booneville.

Materials from the estate of JoAnn Baldwin (1941-2019) of Arkadelphia [AR]. Baldwin was born in Hot Springs [AR] to Mike and Mary Jackson Parker. JoAnn married Theodore Euper in 1959.  They were divorced in 1966, and she later married James Baldwin. Collection contains family correspondence, over 350 family photographs, newspaper clippings, and ephemera.

Physician appointment books of Dr. James R. Barnett, who was a partner in the Reid-Barnett Hospital in Arkadelphia [AR]. Correspondence, ephemera, diaries, sermon notes, newspaper clippings and photographs from Blakeney (1887-1950), former US Army Chaplin who served in the 1916-1917 Mexican Expedition, World War I and World War II. Blakeney was a 1917 graduate of Ouachita Baptist College [Arkadelphia, AR] and served on the college staff following his retirement as a colonel in the US Army.

Photograph albums (4) kept by Blakeney, a 1917 graduate of Ouachita Baptist College and chaplain in the United States Army for 32 years. Albums contain approximately 450 photographs documenting Blakeney’s time as a student at Ouachita, his service in the Mexican Expedition against Francisco “Pancho” Villa in 1916-1917, and his service in Europe during World War I. Scenes document military camp life, fellow soldiers and chaplains, and domestic scenes with friends and family.

Clark papers, Alvin Edison, 1932-1978. OBU.1989.030. 2.95 c.f.
Clark’s monthly chaplain reports (1942-1957), church bulletins, programs, brochures, scrapbook, artifacts and publications. Clark (1918-2010), a native of Lockney [TX], attended Ouachita Baptist College (1935-1939), Bible Baptist Institute (1939-1941), and New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary (1846-1951) before enlisting in the US Army in February 1941. He served as chaplain until 1946 and saw action alongside the men to whom he ministered in Germany and the Solomon Islands. From 1951 t0 1957, Clark served as chaplain during the Korean Conflict. Before and after his military service, Clark pastored a number of churches in Arkansas and in Louisiana.

Clark was born in Beirne [AR] in 1926 and graduated from Gurdon High School (1943) and the University of Arkansas (1948). He was a registered professional engineer, employed by Arkansas Power & Light until his retirement.

Primarily correspondence between James G. Clark and Susie Hendrix of Okolona [AR] during their courtship between April 1886-May 1887, as well as their marriage and teacher licenses. James Clark (1859-1937) moved with his parents from Winston County, Mississippi, to Okolona as a child. By the age of 21, he was working in a lumber mill. He rose from obscurity to a position of wealth and prominence, beginning with owning a small sawmill at Beirne in the late 1880s.

Clayton’s handwritten notes about her experiences at Ouachita Baptist College, discussing campus activities and other aspects of college life. Clayton (1905-1999) graduated from high school in Texarkana, before attending Ouachita College, where she received degrees in Organ and English. Clayton returned to Ouachita in the mid-1930s and taught languages. Also two scrapbooks containing autographs, photographs, programs and ephemera from college days.

Cobb was one of the fourteen members of the graduating class of 1895. Also includes correspondence about a 1935 class reunion and Cobb's death in 1947. Following his graduation from Ouachita, Cobb became an attorney and served Hot Springs as sheriff, special chancellor, and circuit judge, in addition to practicing law.

Newspapers articles, obituary, memorial service program, and email correspondence pertaining to the crash of American Airlines Flight 1420 at the Clinton National Airport, Little Rock [AR]. The Ouachita Baptist University Singers were aboard the plane, returning from a concert in Germany. OBU student, James Harrison, and Rachel Fuller, daughter of OBU faculty members, perished in the crash, along with nine others.

Business and personal correspondence and documents relating to the activities in which Arkadelphia [AR] resident, Albert Crow (1868-1903) was engaged from the 1890s through 1902. Crow’s various businesses included the Arkadelphia Telephone Company, the Crow Brothers Drug Store, the Arkadelphia Novelty Company, the St. Louis, Iron Mountain, Southern, and Fort Smith Railways. In 1902, Crow served as Clark County Assessor.

Slides, photographs, and field notes from Daniel, a well-known wildlife and nature photographer in the 20^th century. Daniel also graduated from Ouachita Baptist College [Arkadelphia, AR] in 1929. Collection contains more than 57,000 slides, forty-six volumes of field notes describing places in Africa, Canada, the Galapagos Islands, Ecuador, Trinidad, French Guiana, and various western and southern states in North America. Other materials include newspaper clippings and articles written by Daniel.

Denny (1912-1992),  a native of Greenland [AR] in Washington County, was a graduate of Ouachita Baptist University and Southwestern Seminary. He and his wife served the Baptist denomination in Ohio on ministry and missionary teams, establishing over thirty churches.

Dillard graduated from Arkadelphia High School in 1919 and attended Ouachita Baptist College for one year, transferring to Arkansas State Teachers’ College  and later finishing her teaching degree at Henderson State Teachers College (now Henderson State University). She taught school in Richwoods, Okolona, Hebron and Copeland Ridge, and Gurdon. Dillard was active in numerous organizations and was an avid photographer of wildflowers.

Scrapbooks and typescripts of many of Halliburton’s newspaper articles, covering a wide variety of topics, many focused on the history of Clark County [AR]. Halliburton (1887-1976) moved with his parents to Arkadelphia in 1904, where he attended Ouachita Academy and Ouachita Baptist College. Halliburton became a journalist, most noted for his coverage of sporting events at Ouachita and Henderson. From 1920-1943, he served as editor of the local newspaper, the Daily Siftings Herald, and later joined the staff of the Southern Standard. Halliburton was also a correspondent for the Memphis [TN] Commercial Appeal, the Arkansas Democrat, and the Arkansas Gazette.

Account books belonging to William Smyth (W. S.) Johnson for his service station at Seventh and Clinton streets in Arkadelphia, opened in July 1920. Johnson’s service station was among the first drive-in service stations in Arkansas.  According to a 1932 newspaper article, his station was "rated as one of the largest and best automobile stations in southwest Arkansas."

He also served as pastor and Sunday School teacher for several churches in Arkansas.

35mm film of the burning of Old Main on the campus of Ouachita Baptist College [Arkadelphia, AR] on the night of May 24, 1949, as well as day-after scenes of burned building shell. Old Main served as the administration building at Ouachita and housed the college library until burning. Two reels of film, one VHS and one DVD.

Records are primarily photographs of conferences, trainings and outings, as well as scrapbooks created by program director, Shirley McMillan. Daily physician logs in journal form from 1935-1968, appointment diaries for Reid’s physician’s office, certificates and licenses, and medical school photographs. Reid (1908-1970) was a native of Delight {AR] and a graduate of Henderson College (now Henderson State University), as well as the University of Arkansas Medical School. He operated a medical practice in Arkadelphia {AR], beginning in 1934, above A1 Stephens Drug Store. He partnered with Dr. Barnett in forming the Reid-Barnett Hospital in 1949. He later served as chief of staff at the Clark County Memorial Hospital.

Two oversize scrapbooks on the Reynolds Metals Robert P. Patterson Aluminum Reduction Plant, which opened at Gum Springs AR] in February 1954. The plant closed in June 1984. Scrapbook contains copious newspaper clippings relating to the construction of the plant, its impact on Clark County, employees, family members of employees, plant production, community involvement, and John McClellan's intervention to keep the plant open during a production slump in the early 1960s. Includes greeting cards, ephemera, circulars produced for plant employees, correspondence, magazine clippings, pamphlets, and over 230 b/w photographs of the plant site, plant construction, interior and exterior of plant, employees, plant activities and its 25th anniversary in 1979. Contains invitation to celebratory luncheon at DeGray Lodge, newspaper clippings, and 50 black and white photographs of commemorative events, including dinner for management at Arlington Hotel, Hot Springs {AR], plant tour for politicians, and community open house.

Richardson married Alvin A. Brightwell in 1907. Widowed in 1930, she married W. S. Johnson of Arkadelphia, Clark County, Arkansas in 1950. Photographs are likely of friends and relatives in Arkansas, Texas, California, Illinois, New Mexico, Nebraska, and Indiana. Also includes newspaper clipping related to the Spooner-Brightwell family.

Papers of Michael Avery Ross (1961-), a native of southwestern Arkansas who served six terms in the United States Congress from the Fourth Congressional District spanning the southern portion of Arkansas. After leaving Congress in 2013, Ross became the Democratic candidate for governor in 2014 but was defeated in an election cycle that marked Arkansas's shift from a Democratic to a Republican state.

Selph earned degrees from Ouachita Baptist College and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. During his career, he pastored churches in Texas and Arkansas, spending 25 years at First Baptist Church, Benton [AR] in Saline County.

Papers primarily dealing with the Sloan family of Arkadelphia [AR]. James Sloan (1793-1862) came with this family to Clark County [AR] circa 1830. He homesteaded in Dobyville. Sloan was active in county government, serving as County Treasurer for ten years. Included are yearbooks from Women's Library Association and local Daughters of the American Revolution chapter, genealogical records, scrapbooks, journals, certificates, Ouachita Baptist College ephemera, sheet music, newspaper clippings and photographs.

Army during World War II in the 9^th Infantry Division, and was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart and cluster. After his military service, he taught math and history and coached in the Arkadelphia public schools.

Staley chaired the prayer and dedication services for Governor and later President Bill Clinton, a childhood friend.

Sermon notes, worship service recordings, correspondence, writings, photographs, and slides from Worley Oscar Vaught (1911-1989), who was pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock [AR] from 1945 until his retirement in 1983. Vaught’s tape ministry distributed three million sermons worldwide. Vaught was also a leader in state and national Baptist circles. He served as president of the Arkansas Baptist State Convention and as vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention.

Bound volume of cartoons by Private Abian A. “Wally” Wallgren, originally published in the Stars and Strips newspaper during the World War I. Wallgren worked as a cartoonist for the Philadelphia Public Ledger and the Washington Post before the outbreak of the war. During the War, he served in France with the 5th Marines of the 1st Division. Wallgren’s cartoons appeared in every issue of the Stars and Stripes, poking fun at army life, satirizing the absurdity of army regulations, and highlighting the differences between the army brass and the frontline soldier. This compiled volume of cartoons was sold for the benefit of the War Orphan Continuation Fund.

In addition, papers contain financial and annexation records for Arkansas school districts, copies of policies, procedures and new state regulations, and a disaster plan for assisting children moving into Arkansas School Districts following Hurricane Katrina. Westmoreland was Dean of Education and director of teaching at Ouachita Baptist University from 1991 to 2006.

Documents, newspaper clippings, photograph album, framed certificates, personal and financial papers relating to Wetherington’s life and career as an educator. Includes materials relating to the Arkansas Technical Assistance and Consultative Center (ATAC) at Ouachita Baptist University [Arkadelphia, AR], which provided assistance to schools in the process of integrating. Wetherington, a native of Dalark [AR] in Dallas County, taught in Arkansas schools and colleges for over fifty years. He joined the faculty of Ouachita Baptist College in 1961 as chairman of the Department of Education and director of teacher training and graduate studies.

Minutes and membership lists of church organized in 1884 in Garland County, Arkansas. The church was originally located on land one mile west of the Buckville Post Office, an area now covered by Lake Ouachita, and originally in Montgomery County. The church disbanded in 1930 when members believed the construction of Blakeley Mountain Dam and Lake Ouachita to be imminent.

Scrapbook of Pfc.  Joe and Pfc. Leroy Wimberly, Mena [AR] in Polk County. The Wimberly brothers were the sons of Mrs. Ova Edna Wimberly. Joe was killed in actions in the Philippines on February 18, 1945, after serving in Hawaii, New Guinea, and Australia. LeRoy served in Germany. The scrapbook is decorated with the insignia of the 83rd Infantry Division, the 8th Armored Division, and the 87th Infantry Division. Attached to the inside of the front cover is an Iron Cross and a postcard of the Italian ship "Volcania." Album also contains newspapers from the various divisions listed here, a censored letter, a ration card and a newspaper clipping detailing Pfc. Joe Wimberly's death.

Mrs. Winburn served as Dean of Women at Ouachita Baptist College from 1940-1949. Also contains Susan Winburn’s Civil War diary.
