WALKER CONFERENCE CENTER – OUACHITA BAPTIST UNIVERSITY

Hosted by Ouachita’s Huckabee School of Education, Called to Teach is a gathering for current teachers, former teachers, upcoming teachers and anyone interested in education. The conference will consist of various breakouts led by expert educators as well as a keynote address by author, educator, consultant and founder of Teachers Who Pray, Marilyn Rhames.

The theme this year is “Building Relationships.” Educators will celebrate their calling as teachers and learn from one another as they share creative ideas. Attendees also can receive 6 hours of professional development credit through the Arkansas Department of Education. A conference T-shirt, lunch and a copy of Marilyn’s book, The Master Teacher, are included in the price of the event. Topics will include Arkansas Department of Education: Division of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE) initiatives, classroom management, STEM, technology, reading, special education, working with diverse groups and more. Additional details will be available in early summer.

Marilyn Anderson Rhames

Marilyn RhamesMarilyn Anderson Rhames is a Doctoral Academy Fellow in the Department of Education Reform at the University of Arkansas. Her research interests intersect religious faith and race in K-12 public education. She is the founder of the national nonprofit organization Teachers Who Pray and the author of the book The Master Teacher: 12 Spiritual Lessons That Can Transform Schools and Revolutionize Public Education. While teaching in Chicago Public Schools for 14 years, Marilyn wrote blogs for Education Week and Education Post. She has published more than 400 articles, including guest commentaries for The New York Times, Huffington Post, Black Enterprise and Education Next. Named the 2013 Blogger/Commentator of the Year by the Bammy Awards, Marilyn has been interviewed by media outlets such as CBS, CBN, TLN, World magazine, Christianity Today and Moody Radio. Her thought partnership has led to speaking invitations at the White House, the U.S. Department of Education, Harvard Leadership Institute for Faith and Education, Yale University, the American Enterprise Institute, two TEDx conferences and in many other forums. As an entrepreneur, Marilyn has provided strategic and editorial consulting to clients including the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Cardus and the Leadership Institute of Nevada. Prior to her career in education, Marilyn earned a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and reported for People, TIME, Newsday and The Journal News in New York City. Her largest and most meaningful assignment was covering the terrorist attacks of 9/11. On that day, Marilyn accepted the call to teach.
