Do you want grass or mud?

January 15, 2019

“Do you want grass or mud?” It was a simple question with an obvious answer. And we knew what we were being asked when Dr. Ben Elrod, president of Ouachita during my time as a student, said, “Do you want grass or mud?” I was sitting in Jones Performing Arts Center.

Women's Rush outfit guide: Ideas to help you show your style

January 11, 2019

Rush is my favorite week of the year! Girls, although Rush Week is super fun and exciting, it can also be kind of stressful – from choosing outfits to wanting to ask the right questions to making the right decision on “pref” night.

Guys at Ouachita: "I'm just rushing for the food"

January 10, 2019

Rush Week is coming up at Ouachita. Welcome to the great gender divide! Often, the women on campus are busy planning outfits and garnering recommendation letters while the men are much more relaxed and just excited to try a free smoothie.

Making healthy choices and avoiding the "Freshman 15"

December 21, 2018

The “Freshman 15:” Is it a myth, or is it true? Well, statistics show that a majority of students gain around 10-15 pounds their freshman year. If this is true, how can we show those stats they have nothing on us? Living a healthy lifestyle is very important not only for our physical health, but also our mental health.

Beating the test anxiety bully

November 27, 2018

No one likes a bully, and this one is twisting your stomach in knots, splotching your neck with hives and leaving your palms dripping with sweat. You’ve about chewed your pencil in half trying to fight him off, but to no avail. The jerk won’t budge.

Ouachita Tigers Basketball Camp makes an impact in Wyoming

November 06, 2018

I believe God often uses sports as an avenue for people to share the gospel of Christ. We see this through great organizations such as the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. It was through this platform that God planted the idea in me for “Ouachita Tigers Basketball Camp for Christ” to aid in church planting in Wyoming.

The entangling trap of fear

August 02, 2018

“Did we get everything?,” my father asked. With soft tears in my eyes, I said, “Yes, I think it’s time to go.” I remember move-in day like it was yesterday. I’m the oldest of three kids, and I’ve always been close to my family. Living in Louisiana, I felt that I would be so distant from my family when I left for Ouachita – so distant from what I always knew as home.

The history behind Jones Performing Arts Center and Verser Theatre

April 30, 2018

This year, two facilities that play a large role on Ouachita’s campus are celebrating milestone anniversaries. Verser Theatre is celebrating its 50th year on Ouachita’s campus and houses Ouachita’s theatre program and many of Ouachita’s student productions. Jones Performing Arts Center is celebrating its 25th anniversary and is another building that has a huge role in every Ouachitonian’s college career.

Not rushing? Not in a social club? How you can still enjoy Rush & Induction Weeks.

January 14, 2019

Right after the “most wonderful time of the year” comes what can sometimes feel like the loneliest time of the year. For “indies,” those of us who are not involved in a social club at Ouachita, Rush Week and Induction Week can totally change your normal social interactions because your club friends are so busy. But don’t worry!

20 questions to consider during Rush Week

January 10, 2019

It’s almost here—Rush Week! I feel like all I could think about my first semester freshman year was whether or not I should join a club. I did know that I wanted to find out as much as I could about the clubs before I made my decision. That is exactly what Rush parties are for!

How "small" made a big difference in my academic career

December 21, 2018

Deciding where you want to go to college by weighing what each school offers can be difficult – especially if you aren’t sure if you would benefit more in your studies by attending a big school or a small school. Going to a school of Ouachita’s size for my education has had some major advantages.

Behind the names: Flippen and Perrin may not be who you think

December 04, 2018

It might be surprising to learn that the residence hall that has housed Ouachita freshman men for the past 10 years does not actually bear the names of two men or even one, but of a lady: Mrs. Jane Conger Flippen Perrin.

Why I transferred to Ouachita after one year at a state school

November 27, 2018

What do I want to do with my life? Who will my roommate be? Will it be difficult to make new friends? I remember sitting in my room as a senior in high school haunted by these questions.

The festivities of Thanksgiving: professors share their traditions

November 21, 2018

Family traditions are more common during this jacket-wearing, Hallmark movie time of year. Some may say family football is the way to go. Others may say homemade sweet potato casserole is key to the holiday festivities. With different people holding different traditions, this time of year can be meaningful for each of us in different ways.

The Gosser siblings

August 03, 2018

From the earliest years of their lives, Jenny (’82), Bobby (’83), John (’84), Leigh Anna (’89) and April (’94) were immersed in all that is Ouachita. Their parents, Marianne (’55) and Bob (’56), made sure that they were well acquainted with the small-town college in Southern Arkansas.

Tips for visiting campus: Make the most of your college visit

June 18, 2018

Visiting campus is a huge part of the college selection process. It gives you a glimpse into campus life and allows you to physically see all that the school has to offer. My first campus visit to Ouachita was my deciding factor in choosing to attend school here. It felt like home from the moment I stepped onto campus.

Behind the names: The history behind Moses-Provine Hall

April 06, 2018

Being a graphic design major, much of my time is spent on the second floor of Moses-Provine Hall (or as most students call it, MoPro). That being said, many students, along with myself, are not aware of who the building that they spend so much time in is named for. Who were Moses and Provine and why is this building named for them?
